Grip is a novel about a man in the difficult transition of being newly married and planning with his wife to settle into a career, buy a house, have a baby, and live happily ever after.  Sebastian, or Seb, as his wife and friends call him, is both aided and tormented by a voice in his head that may be a result of schizophrenia or bi-polar disorder, or may truly be a result of glimpses that Seb has of parallel universes but has trouble remembering fully.  They are like shapes in the dark that disappear when you look straight at them.  The voice, which Seb refers to as his “thought familiar” has helped him cheat on exams, mocks his personal habits, and most recently is helping Seb to hide the bodies of the those he has accidentally enjoyed murdering.  The familiar bores easily and is constantly suggesting Seb put himself in harmful situations for its own entertainment.  As the story progresses, Seb becomes convinced that he will not be able to avoid the compulsion to kill his wife, whom he loves but cannot express that love to her.  In an effort to save his relationship and find the happiness that everyone seeks, Seb does his best to seek help, recover and thwart once and for all the demon familiar that troubles him.
